An awards show gets it right for once!

• Last night the awards were handed out at the 61st annual Golden Globe Awards. I'm so ecstatic for the following winners:
  
  -Picture -- Drama: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of King
  -Picture -- Musical or Comedy: Lost in Translation
  -Actor in a Leading Role -- Musical or Comedy: Bill Murray (Lost in Translation)
  -Screenplay -- Motion Picture: Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation)

  • I've always been a casual fan of Sonic Youth. They can be excrutiatingly difficult to listen to but other times reach moments of pure bliss. If anything, I appreciate them for what they've brought to the music industry: artistic integrity in the face of major label pressures, a D.I.Y. aesthetic, and (like Elvis Costello, David Bowie and to a lesser extent the Rolling Stones) a durability in the face of growing older, to continue to release new music. I'm really psyched about getting their music video collection!

    • I've only been able to listen to some of this CD so far. Emm does a cover of the Def Leppard song 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' and manages to transform the song from an adrenaline-fueled rocker to a achingly beautiful piano ballad. Seriously, when she sings "I'm hot, sticky sweet, from my head to my feet", it doesn't sound cheesy at all.
