Waves

Marjorie FairCan anyone give me the lowdown on Marjorie Fair? They're playing the Horseshoe Tavern's Nu Music Nite[no cover, btw] on June 7th and will be playing on June 10th as part of NXNE a show at The 360 Club. Thanks to Fingertips(see May 23, 2005 post) for pointing me towards an mp3 of their song "Waves". It's a dreamy pop song that builds itself upon a lilting keyboard arrangement towards a lush orchestrated chorus. The production's pristine, maybe too pristine for some tastes, but still very likable. Here are some more song samples. The songs are pleasant, if not sometimes engaging, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they'd sound much better live. If you're interested their debut CD "Self-Help Serenade"(released in May 2004) is available now. They're also playing a live session on MPR 89.3 The Current later on today. [photo from http://../]

Burned By The Sun, we(or at least I) forgive you for being missing in action these past several months.

The new issue of Being There[issue 10, June 2005] is now online, including interesting features on Neil Young, as well as Stiff Records.

Saddle Creek Records' Maria Taylor with openers Statistics will be playing the El Mocambo on July 22nd, according to Pollstar.

View Magazine[Hamilton, ON] and the Montreal Mirror both talk with Montreal psych-pop band The High Dials in advance of the release of their new album "War of the Wakening Phantoms" on June 7th. The High Dials headline the Umbrella Showcase(part of the NXNE festival) at The Drake Hotel in Toronto on June 9th.

If screaming kids, traffic jams, and lineups around the block are your thing, then get ready when the Foo Fighters come to invade Toronto. The band'll be performing an hour long acoustic session for Edge 102.1 on June 16th at 5 pm. They head to HMV[333 Yonge St.] for an autograph session at 6:30 pm. That evening at 10 pm the band'll play at Lee's Palace for a crowd of radio contest winners, but the Edge'll broadcast the first hour live. The band's new album "In Your Honor" is released June 14th.
